Listen To The Silence

February 5, 2008 | Filed Under Health and Fitness

We are constantly bombarded by sound. Television, radio, the hum of human activity all combine to keep our minds in a constant state of bombardment by noise. Are all of these distractions causing us to become less satisfied with the life we have carved out for ourselves?

Recreation properties have never been more sought after. However, this has only moved the irritant from one location to another. To really experience the beauty of silence and what it may do for you you have to go somewhere that there are no people, no cars, no dogs, no power and preferably little to no wind. This may more difficult for some than others because of where they live and the resources they have access to.

I love to go to abandoned farm yards (miles from anywhere) and just sit or wander around and listen to the silence until it becomes deafening. Then imagine the history of the place. It doesn’t matter if you know any of the actual history — just let your mind think back to when the bulk of the work was done by hand. Both husbands and wives worked together (along with sometimes many children) in order to keep the farm operating.

Neighbours were close by since the size of the farms were so much smaller. Company was always welcome and often invited to stay well into the evening. In the early days before telephones reached every farm your family was your primary means of entertainment — story telling, singing and playing cards helped time pass. {how long has it been since you heard the term — help time pass?} Radio came, but was limited by the life of the battery.

When the telephone did arrive not only did it open up an opportunity to speak to people almost anywhere at any time it also allowed people to rubberneck (listen to your neighbors while the were talking to someone else). It was frowned upon, but provided many hours of entertainment for many people with little to do. Well, before I realize it, much time has passed and it’s time to leave this temporary sanctuary.
